Hellenic Atmo’Black Metallers Hypnagogia released their first Full length album “Carving the Subconsious”.Release date 17 February 2023 in digital format. The Macedonians, Sotiris (Bass (Legions of Hades thrash/Death Metal), Paris (Guitar, mix, mastering), Pelo (vocals)
signed to “Theogonia Records” and the official release in physical form is expected on May 25, 2023.
The name of the band Hypnagogia is special I would say (Hypnagogia is the intermediate state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep.) and I start from it as anyone who understands it or has felt it, in combination with the name of the album (Carving the Subconscious: carving the subconscious) and the cover which I consider “right on spot” definitely makes sense from the beginning.
The Album consists of 7 tracks and has a duration of around 50 minutes. Its structure and the order of the tracks I would say is quite good, in essence it tells the story from Hypnagogia (track 1) to Hypnopompia (track 7 with in between, Sadness of Insanity: the sadness of loneliness (track 2) during “transition”, Carving the Subconscious: the deep subconscious, insanity (track 3), Impearled Vissions: The Mora spirit and our inner strength (track 4) – it would be good not to mention the Mora spirit-, Astral Journey: The journey when the transition is complete (track 5), Mournful Congregation: here perhaps the possession by the spirit and the search for the cause and the strength to escape, so as not to be “lost” forever (Track 6) and finally Hypnopompia: the state that the subconscious leads you to wake up (Track 7).
Acoustically it is a good atmospheric record with nice melodies though and I can say that track 1, 2, 6 are still playing in my head as a rhythm melody. Guitar, Bass and vocals bring out all this transitional panting, from the insanity to the waiting for the release of the “journey” that one would expect but there are moments when the drums tend to tire, track 2 and 3, it’s probably a bad choice of drum machine that it pierces your nervous system and maybe it’s one of the black spots on the disc.
A Hellenic Atmo Black Metal with an interesting theme and element, which I think has and could give a lot more than this…. ON Hold!
Happy listening!
