Γιορτάζοντας πάνω από τρεις δεκαετίες ανυπακοής και κυριαρχίας, οι ROTTING CHRIST συνεχίζουν να κυριαρχούν ως αιχμή του δόρατος του «ελληνικού» black metal ήχου.
Από την καταγωγή τους με τα “Satanas Tedeum” και “Passage to Arcturo” στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’90, μέχρι τον πρωτοποριακό “ελληνικό” μελωδικό black metal ήχο τους με άλμπουμ όπως το “Sanctus Diavolos” και το “Theogonia” και τη δημιουργία μνημειωδών έργων όπως το “Rituals” και το “The Heretics” υπό τη σημαία της Season of Mist, οι ROTTING CHRIST έχουν συντρίψει συνεχώς τις προσδοκίες και έχουν διευρύνει τους ηχητικούς τους ορίζοντες.

Το δυναμικό δίδυμο του Σάκη και Θέμη Τόλη δεν αντικατοπτρίζεται μόνο στην τρομερή δισκογραφία τους αλλά και στις ηλεκτρισμένες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις τους.

Στις αμυδρά φωτισμένες κατακόμβες του extreme metal, ένα όνομα στέκεται ως μονόλιθος:
ROTTING CHRIST. Ο Σάκης Tόλης και ο αδελφός του Θέμης ξεκίνησαν αυτό το συγκρότημα μαζί το 1987.
Στις τρεις δεκαετίες που ακολούθησαν, αυτοί οι Έλληνες τιτάνες έχουν αφήσει το μαυρισμένο αποτύπωμά τους σε όλο τον κόσμο του metal.
Έχουν κυκλοφορήσει 13 στούντιο άλμπουμ και έχουν παίξει περισσότερες από 1.300 συναυλίες σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Κάτω από όλη αυτή τη σκληρή δουλειά, οι Rotting Christ έχουν μόνο ένα όραμα, μια παρόρμηση όχι μόνο να ωθήσουν τα όρια του extreme metal, αλλά και να συνεχίσουν να επανεφευρίσκουν τον εαυτό τους στην πορεία.

Η εξέλιξη των Rotting Christ έχει ξεδιπλωθεί σε διάφορα διακριτά κεφάλαια. Αφού ξεκίνησαν πιο κοντά στο ελάχιστα ελεγχόμενο χάος του grindcore, συνέχισαν να καθιερώνουν τον εμβληματικό ήχο του ελληνικού black metal.
Τα άλμπουμ τους συχνά αγκαλιάζουν εκλεπτυσμένα γοτθικά ηχοτοπία, μόνο για να βυθιστούν πίσω στα βάθη της βλάσφημης θέρμης. Κάθε κεφάλαιο σηματοδότησε μια άλλη, περαιτέρω εξερεύνηση και μια ακλόνητη δέσμευση να ξεπεράσουμε τα όρια.

Αλλά το πραγματικό σημείο καμπής ήρθε το 2007, όταν οι Rotting Christ υπέγραψαν σύμφωνο με τη Season of Mist. Εξαπέλυσαν μια σειρά άλμπουμ για τη γαλλική εταιρεία που αψήφησαν κάθε προσδοκία.
Από τη διαπεραστική Θεογονία και το συμφωνικό μεγαλείο του Aelo μέχρι την τελετουργική ένταση του Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού, οι κινηματογραφικές εμπειρίες που δημιούργησε το Rotting Christ έγιναν ένα θέαμα πομπώδους ατμόσφαιρας, μαγευτικών χορωδιών και νεοκλασικών ενορχηστρώσεων.
Το απροσδόκητο είναι το modus operandi τους, με τη χρήση διαφόρων γλωσσών (λατινικά, αραβικά, ελληνικά, αγγλικά) καθώς και η εκτεταμένη χρήση διάσημης ποίησης υφασμένης στη μουσική τους, όπως το «The Raven» του Edgar Allan Poe στους Αιρετικούς.

Το 2019, το επικό ταξίδι των Rotting Christ συνεχίστηκε με τη συλλογή The Apocryphal Spell, η οποία προσφέρει στους θαυμαστές μια οικεία ματιά σε ακυκλοφόρητο και σπάνιο υλικό.
Αυτό τους επέτρεψε να συγκεντρώσουν δυνάμεις, προετοιμάζοντας την κυκλοφορία του επόμενου, πολυαναμενόμενου, 14ου ολοκληρωμένου στούντιο άλμπουμ τους: “Pro Xristou”.

Το “Pro Xristou” (‘Προ Χριστού’ στα ελληνικά), χρησιμεύει ως ένθερμος φόρος τιμής στους τελευταίους ειδωλολάτρες βασιλιάδες που αντιστάθηκαν στην επίθεση του Χριστιανισμού, διαφυλάσσοντας τις αρχαίες αξίες και γνώσεις τους.
Σε αυτή τη θεματική οδύσσεια, που υφαίνεται περίπλοκα μέσα από κομμάτια όπως ο «Αποστάτης» και το «Ygdrassil», το Rotting Christ εμβαθύνει στις κληρονομιές ιστορικών μορφών όπως ο Φλάβιος Κλαύδιος Ιουλιανός και οι σκανδιναβοί μυθολογικοί βασιλιάδες, ενσαρκώνοντας τη δύναμη της παγανιστικής σοφίας απέναντι στις χριστιανικές αντιξοότητες.
Το άλμπουμ συμπυκνώνει την ουσία του χαρακτηριστικού στυλ των Rotting Christ – μελωδικό, αλλά σκληρό μερικές φορές – επανεφευρίσκοντας τον εαυτό τους για άλλη μια φορά, ενώ παραμένουν ριζωμένοι στην 35χρονη κληρονομιά τους.

In the dimly lit catacombs of extreme metal, one name stands as a monolith: ROTTING CHRIST. Sakis Tolis and his brother Themis started this band together back in 1987. In the three decades since, these Greek titans have left their blackened imprint all over the metal world. They’ve released 13 studio albums and played more than 1,300 concerts around the globe. Underneath all this hard work, Rotting Christ have but one vision – an urge to not only push the boundaries of extreme metal, but to keep reinventing themselves along the way.

Rotting Christ’s evolution has unfolded across several distinct chapters. After starting out closer to the barely controlled chaos of grindcore, they went on to establish the iconic sound of Hellenic black metal. Their albums often embrace refined gothic soundscapes, only to plunge back into the depths of blasphemous fervour. Each chapter marked another, further exploration, and an unwavering commitment to push boundaries.

But the real turning point came in 2007, when Rotting Christ signed a pact with Season of Mist. They unleashed a series of albums for the French label that defied any and all expectations. From the piercing Theogonia and the symphonic grandeur of Aelo to the ritualistic intensity of Κατά Τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού, the cinematic experiences created by Rotting Christ became a spectacle of bombastic atmospheres, mesmerizing choirs, and neo-classical arrangements. The unexpected is their modus operandi, with the use of various languages (Latin, Arabic, Greek, English) as well as the extensive use of famous poetry woven into their music, like Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’ on The Heretics.

In 2019, Rotting Christ’s epic journey continued with The Apocryphal Spell compilation, which offers fans an intimate glimpse into unreleased and rare material. This allowed them to gather strength, preparing for the release of their next, highly anticipated, 14th full-length studio album: Pro Xristou.

Pro Xristou (‘Before Christ’ in Greek), serves as a fervent tribute to the last Pagan kings who resisted the onslaught of Christianity, guarding their ancient values and knowledge. In this thematic odyssey, intricately woven through tracks such as ‘The Apostate’ and ‘Ygdrassil’, Rotting Christ delves into the legacies of historical figures such as Flavius Claudius Julianus and Nordic mythological kings, embodying the might of Pagan wisdom in the face of Christian adversity. The album encapsulates the essence of Rotting Christ’s signature style – melodic, yet harsh at times – reinventing themselves yet again, while remaining rooted in their 35-year legacy.
