Σήμερα οι θρυλικοί doom metallers Pagan Altar κάνουν πρεμιέρα το νέο κομμάτι “Saints and Sinners” στην ιστοσελίδα του γερμανικού περιοδικού Rock Hard.
Το κομμάτι είναι το δεύτερο που αποκαλύπτεται από το πολυαναμενόμενο πέμπτο άλμπουμ του συγκροτήματος “Never Quite Dead”, που θα κυκλοφορήσει διεθνώς στις 25 Απριλίου μέσω της Dying Victims Productions.

Οι Pagan Altar είναι ο ορισμός μιας CULT μπάντας.
Σχηματίστηκαν το 1978, κατά τη διάρκεια των πρώτων ημερών του επιδραστικού κινήματος NWOBHM, τελειοποίησαν την τέχνη τους στη σκηνή με μια απόκοσμη, δραματική παρουσίαση.
Και όμως, ο ήχος των Pagan Altar έτεινε περισσότερο προς το doom metal, το οποίο τότε δεν ήταν ακόμα ένα υποείδος με τη δική του αισθητική, αλλά και εμποτισμένο με τη μητρική αγγλική folk καθώς και το hard rock.
Ωστόσο, ο κόσμος εκτός του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου δεν θα γνώριζε για το συγκρότημα μέχρι χρόνια μετά τη διάλυσή τους, με την κυκλοφορία του “Volume 1” το 1998, το ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ των Pagan Altar που ηχογραφήθηκε το 1982.
Στη συνέχεια, η λατρεία των Pagan Altar θα άρχιζε να μεγαλώνει και μια εντελώς νέα βάση θαυμαστών πεινασμένη για παλιούς ήχους περίμενε κάθε σημάδι ακάλυπτου χρυσού.
Το 2004 άρχισαν να εμφανίζονται άφθονοι θησαυροί.
Πρώτα ήταν το “The Time Lord” EP, το οποίο χρονολογείται από τις πρώτες μέρες των Pagan Altar, και αργότερα εκείνο το έτος ήρθε το full length “Lords of Hypocrisy”, του οποίου το υλικό ηχογραφήθηκε αρχικά κατά τη διάρκεια του 1982-1984, αλλά ηχογραφήθηκε ξανά το 2004: από το παρελθόν μέχρι σήμερα, το συγκρότημα ήταν πράγματι ενεργό και πάλι!
Ένα χρόνο αργότερα, έφτασε το πλήρες “Judgment of the Dead”, με υλικό που γράφτηκε μεταξύ 1978 και 1981 και ηχογραφήθηκε το 1982, αλλά έγινε remastered το 1998.
Προστέθηκε ένα bonus track που ηχογραφήθηκε το 2004, φέρνοντας και πάλι το παρελθόν στο παρόν.
Το παρελθόν και το παρόν συγκρούστηκαν πραγματικά στο μονολιθικό “Mythical & Magical” του 2006, πραγματικά, μια τέλεια περιγραφή των Pagan Altar στο απόγειο των μαγευτικών δυνάμεών τους, το οποίο περιείχε υλικό που εκτείνεται από το 1977 έως το 1983, αλλά καταγράφηκε κατά τη διάρκεια του 2005 και του 2006.
Στη συνέχεια, μόνο δύο νέα τραγούδια θα εμφανιστούν για λίγο, το ένα σε split με τους Jex Thoth το 2007, το άλλο το 2011, πριν τραγικά ο θάνατος του ιδρυτικού τραγουδιστή Terry Jones από καρκίνο το 2015.
Ωστόσο πριν από το θάνατό του και με επικεφαλής τον γιο του και συνιδρυτή κιθαρίστα Alan, το συγκρότημα δούλευε σε ένα άλλο άλμπουμ, το οποίο αργότερα ολοκληρώθηκε και κυκλοφόρησε το 2017 ως “The Room of Shadows”.
Ως εκ θαύματος, το “The Room of Shadows” αποδείχθηκε ότι δεν ήταν ο επιτάφιος της μπάντας, καθώς οι Pagan Altar αψηφούν τον χρόνο και επιστρέφουν με το “Never Quite Dead”, έναν «νέο» δίσκο θεωρητικά, αλλά που φέρει το αποτύπωμα του παρελθόντος, ιδιαίτερα με το αδιαμφισβήτητο άγγιγμα του Terry Jones.
Στα φωνητικά εδώ είναι ο Brendan Radigan, τον οποίο οι αληθινοί metallers θα γνωρίζουν από τους Magic Circle, Sumerlands, Savage Oath και πολλά άλλα.
Οι μελαγχολικοί, πάντα οδυνηροί τόνοι του αποδίδουν ευλάβεια στον επικρατούντα παγανιστικό ήχο των Pagan Altar, ενώ δίνουν μια ξεχωριστή πινελιά στο “Never Quite Dead”.
Όπως αναφέρει λεπτομερώς ο Alan Jones στις σημειώσεις του άλμπουμ, σχεδόν όλα τα τραγούδια του άλμπουμ, εκτός από το πιο κοντινό “Kismet”, το οποίο ήρθε ως πρόδρομος του συγκροτήματος του Alan Malac’s Cross στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’90, ενώ ο Terry ήταν ακόμα ζωντανός, και έτσι το “Never Quite Dead” παραμένει ένα αυθεντικά παγανιστικό άλμπουμ Altar. Από το εναρκτήριο “Saints and Sinners” που λικνίζει το ουράνιο τόξο μέχρι μεγαθήρια trad-doom όπως το “Liston Church” και το “The Dead’s Last March” μέχρι τη συναισθηματική κορύφωση του προαναφερθέντος “Kismet”, σχεδόν κάθε πτυχή των Pagan Altar καλύπτεται με απίστευτα συναρπαστικό τρόπο… ακόμα και το λαϊκό ορχηστρικό “Westbury Express”, κρατώντας ζωντανό το μυθικό & μαγικό. Ποτέ δεν πέθανε; Καλύτερα να το πιστέψετε!

PAGAN ALTAR premiere new track at “Rock Hard” magazine’s website!
Today, legendary doom metallers Pagan Altar premiere the new track “Saints and Sinners” at the German Rock Hard magazine’s website. The track is the second to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated fifth album, Never Quite Dead, set for international release on April 25th via Dying Victims Productions.

Pagan Altar are the very definition of a CULT band. Formed in 1978, during the early days of the influential NWOBHM movement, they honed their craft onstage with an eerie, dramatic presentation.
And yet, the Pagan Altar sound tended more toward doom metal – which, back then, was not quite yet a subgenre with its own aesthetics – but also infused with their native English folk as well as hard rock.
Still, the world outside the UK would not know about the band until years after their dissolution, with the 1998 release of Volume 1, Pagan Altar’s debut album recorded in 1982.
Thereafter, the cult of Pagan Altar would begin to grow, and a whole new fanbase hungry for old sounds waited for any sign of uncovered gold.
In 2004, treasures aplenty began to appear. First was The Time Lord EP, which dated back to Pagan Altar’s very earliest days, and later that year came the full-length Lords of Hypocrisy, whose material was originally recorded during 1982-1984 but was re-recorded in 2004: past to present, the band was indeed active again!
A year later, the full-length Judgement of the Dead arrived, featuring material written between 1978 and 1981 and recorded in 1982 but remastered in 1998; a bonus track recorded in 2004 was added, again bringing past to present.
Past and present truly collided on 2006’s monolithic Mythical & Magical – truly, a perfect description of Pagan Altar at the height of their mesmerizing powers – which featured material spanning 1977-1983 but recorded over the course of 2005 and 2006. Thereafter, only two new songs would emerge for a while – one on a split with Jex Thoth in 2007, the other in 2011 – before, tragically, founding vocalist Terry Jones’ death from cancer in 2015.
However, before his death and led by his son and co-founding guitarist Alan, the band had been working on another album, which would later be finished and released in 2017 as The Room of Shadows.
Miraculously, The Room of Shadows proved not to be the band’s epitaph, as Pagan Altar defy time and return with Never Quite Dead – a “new” record in theory, but one bearing the imprint of the past, particularly with Terry Jones’ unmistakable touch.
On vocals here is Brendan Radigan, who true metallers will know from Magic Circle, Sumerlands, Savage Oath, and tons more. His somber, ever-so-poignant tones pay reverence to the prevailing Pagan Altar sound whilst putting a distinctive touch upon Never Quite Dead. As Alan Jones details within the album’s liner notes, nearly all the songs on the album – barring the closer “Kismet,” which came as a precursor to Alan’s band Malac’s Cross in the early ‘90s – originated while Terry was still alive, and thus does Never Quite Dead remain an authentically Pagan Altar album.
From the Rainbow-rocking opener “Saints and Sinners” on to trad-doom juggernauts like “Liston Church” and “The Dead’s Last March” to the emotional climax of the aforementioned “Kismet,” pretty much every aspect of Pagan Altar is covered in incredibly compelling fashion…even the folk instrumental “Westbury Express,” keeping the mythical & magical alive. Never Quite Dead? You better believe it!
