Artistic creation typically draws inspiration from themes such as love, social injustice, historical events, or philosophical inquiry. In the case of SONS OF BUTCHER, however, inspiration stems from more down-to-earth pleasures—most notably, a deep appreciation for bacon.
This approach comes as little surprise given the band’s background. SONS OF BUTCHER originated from a Canadian television series in which comedy was fused with rock music. The group has described its style as “mock rock,” a label that continues to define their work on their latest EP, “Skids”. The title references the term “skids,” used to describe the grungy, cash-strapped stoners of Steeltown—the band’s hometown—as well as the so-called “skid lifestyle.”
The EP features four tracks that explore a range of unconventional themes, from denim as a way of life (“Denim Dreamin’”) and an obsession with bacon (“Makin’ Bacon”), to the darker dealings found on the streets of Steeltown (“Steeltown Handy”) and a fixation on pepper-crusted steak. Musically, the release is driven by punchy riffs, repetitive rhythmic patterns, and infectious choruses, all delivered with a strong sense of humor.
Overall, “Skids” stands out as a release with a clear entertainment-driven focus. In contrast to a significant portion of contemporary rock and metal output, it does not aim to provoke deep reflection or emotional intensity, but rather to offer an immediate and thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.
