EXILIUM NOCTIS – interview on Metalwar.gr

On the occasion of the two big live shows in which black metallers from Volos will participate (Varathron, Deviser, Exilium Noctis live in Thessaloniki and Storming the Gates), Spyros Tribos contacted Exilium Noctis to discuss these two big events and more!!

– Good afternoon Alpha and thanks for contacting us!!
Alpha: Good afternoon Spyros, we thank you for giving us the opportunity to present our work through this beautiful conversation.

– What’s new from Exilium Noctis?
Alpha: I would say our news is good and creative. After the floods and disasters that unfortunately the city of Volos suffered, we got back into a normal flow and started recording the second full length album. As a sample of the upcoming work, very soon we will release our first track entitled “God’s Demise” in an audiovisual form.

– In a few days you have two very important moments for the band. First time your participation in the great and historic live in Thessaloniki with Varathron and Deviser and second your participation in the underground event of the year, Storming The Gates. How do you feel about taking part in these two events?
Alpha: Huge honor friend Spyros. It’s exactly as you mentioned, these are two very important moments for Exilium Noctis, but also for me personally. As an active musician for many years, but also a listener of the domestic hard sound scene, as you can understand I am very excited.

– The importance of each of these two live shows is special. What can Exilium Noctis give and what can they expect from these two shows?
Alpha: I believe that whatever event we perform, whether we play in our neighbor’s yard or at one of the biggest festivals in the world, Exilium Noctis will give their best.
It’s great to exchange energies during a live performance. We draw energy from the participation of the audience and return it to the maximum extent, creating an extreme “fan” atmosphere.

– You have released  “Fragments Of Apocalypse”, an admittedly excellent album, is it easy to render this very good material in live performance?
Alpha: First of all, thank you very much for your kind words. It is an album that contains seven songs taken under really difficult circumstances. I would describe it as quite “earthy” with 1000% soul that certainly, having the right musicians-collaborators and friends by your side, can be performed live, perhaps better than the recorded material.

– Is the live performance for Exilium Noctis the highlight or is the studio a safe environment you prefer?
Alpha: Live performances are definitely important, after all, live shows in my opinion the value of a band. It is a way to “escape” from everyday life and travel musically, as we do in every appearance. However, just as important is the studio.
A place where we are all together and each of us places his own touch for creation.

– Your impressive live performances have made people look forward to seeing you live again, do you intend to have some surprises or even new tracks?
Alpha: In the two live shows that are approaching, we will present our new track entitled “God’s Demise”. A different and definitely more “hard” track, like most of the tracks we record compared to our first album. We have picked up the gears quite a bit, getting closer to the Swedish scene of the 90’s with a more modern touch. Regarding our performances and performance, it has to do purely with the need to be with the world that follows us and as I mentioned before, to exchange energies.

– Do you have fanatical supporters who will be in these two big shows near you, is it a burden for you or does it always play a positive role in the result?
Alpha: Having friends at every live show who like our music can only play a positive role. We love hearing the comments of people who follow us, positive or negative. It’s a way to evolve and get better.

– You are in an area that in recent years produces many remarkable bands and lives metal like few cities in Greece. Do you feel lucky to be in a highly metallic city?
Alpha: That’s true and I’m glad you mention it Spyros. Although Volos is a provincial city, bands such as Mortal void, Imperial moon, Atavism, Rafferty rules, Side effect, Convicted, were some bands that had created a strong core in the extreme field of metal nationwide and we come to today with many worthy successors of the genre, such as Isolert, Temor, Storrmbringer, Human Genom. Also, an important role in the resurgence of hard sound in our city is played by the existence of one of the oldest radio shows in Greece. The reason for the show Golden Rules, which also organizes the Golden R Festival that takes place every year in the city of Volos.

– Is the extreme sound and especially black metal the main thing through expressing the emotions that exist inside you?
Alpha: Certainly extreme sound in general is a means of expressing our emotions.
If I speak personally, I will tell you that I will listen to and study different kinds of music. All genres are art as long as they do not offend the listener…

– Exilium Noctis are on the border between the underground and the next level.
Is the band comfortable in the underground or is it time to take the next step?
Alpha: I have always believed in the evolution of musicians and a band in general.
Yes, we like the underground, we support it and we live it as “romantic” listeners – collectors of hard sound for decades, but we will not say no if we are presented with an opportunity to play at a big festival.

– What does Black Metal mean to you personally and what does it mean to Exilium Noctis?
Alpha: Black Metal is clearly a dark art. The need of the musician, the listener to converse with his dark “I”. For Exilium Noctis it is a means of expression and the cause of our creation.

– Are there limits to your subject matter and where does it come from?
Alpha: We generally don’t put limits on our music, we definitely move around a specific theme, but we can draw elements from anything that might pique our interest. In total, however, we will refer to the extremes of religion and how it affects man negatively…

– As a band you have many influences, can you place me or even name these influences?
Alpha: We love the Swedish scene!
Bands such as Dissection, Necrophobic, Naglfar, have influenced the timbre of Exilium Noctis. Let me also mention the participation of Jens Ryden, (former singer of Naglfar) in the song of our album entitled Wrath Eternal.

– Are good collaboration and chemistry the alpha and omega in a band?
Alpha: I believe that for the longevity and success of a band requires good cooperation, chemistry between members and overall contribution. This creates a smooth operation and a single artistic result.

– Thank you very much for your time and I wish you success in all your efforts.
Alpha: We thank you for the beautiful conversation Spyros and wish in turn good luck in your great work.
Have a nice meeting.
