MASTODON hint at recording for upcoming ninth record

The prospect of MASTODON‘s ninth studio album has been dangled about for awhile now, with drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor indicating back in January that the record will feature a ‘supernatural horror’ concept. At the time, Dailor had hopes the he and his bandmates in the progressive sludge metal outfit would be able to bang out the record quickly too, telling Metal Hammer: “I don’t see a world in which it does not come out in 2025.”

Given the shocking events that occurred in March when the band parted ways with vocalist/guitarist Brent Hinds, we may have to give him some leeway on his proclamation. However, the group are apparently making strides in crafting their first post-Hinds output.

While it remains unclear if an official replacement has been decided upon yet for Hinds, Nick Johnston has been serving as their latest touring guitarist. Guitarist Bill Kelliher is also said to have indicated Johnston has partaken in some writing sessions, suggesting his role may wind up being permanent.

Now, per a post shared on the Patreon of Kelliher yesterday, June 16th, it was revealed that recording sessions have newly commenced. While there may be a new face or two appearing on that effort, it is clear however that the record won’t feature any lingering contributions from Hinds. Kelliher confirmed as much to Guitar World this past March.
