Metalwar: How does “Pulse” reflect the band’s musical evolution since your debut album in 2021?
PENTESILEA ROAD: Pulse reflects the direction of the band for the new album, although is definitely one of the “cleanest” song in terms of structure.
You can find elements that will be recurrent in the rest of the album: heavy riffs, clean guitars and a lot of melodies. We decided to use this one as a first single because is relatively catchy, not too complex…probably a good pick!
Metalwar: Can you delve into the themes explored in “Pulse” and how they tie into the overarching narrative of the upcoming album?
PENTESILEA ROAD: In this song we talk about the concept of lucid dreams, so a state of awareness in the dreamstate.
I have read about the concept and I find it definitely fascinating… the idea is loosely recurring in other songs, although the album has not been conceived as a concept album.
This is a storytelling approach that we used in the previous album as well.
Metalwar: What was the creative process behind “Pulse”? Did it differ from your previous work?
PENTESILEA ROAD: This is the typical kind of song that comes out very quickly: the first draft was very similar to the final version of the song.
The substantial difference with the previous album is that this time we spent more time arranging the song as a band.
I think that is the main difference you will be able to spot in the whole album.
Metalwar: With Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis, Temperance) on vocals and Giovanni Montesano (Cirque du Soleil) on bass, how have these additions influenced your sound?
PENTESILEA ROAD: Yes, I think their presence had a massive impact on the band. In the first album, there was no dedicated bass player: all the guitars and bass were recorded with a “guitar approach” in mind.
In this case, the bass shows its own character.
The same thing for Michele on the vocals… having a single singer in the whole album provides a much better sense of amalgamation and unity in the whole work.
On top of that, Michele did a superb job in interpreting, rather than only singing, the songs.
Metalwar: Your upcoming album is said to explore lucid dreams and the relationship between the future and the past.
How does “Pulse” fit into this concept?
PENTESILEA ROAD: “Pulse” is definitely exploring the dreamtime in its own unique way.
I would suggest to read the lyrics and get inspired by the song, in the way youd like to…
Metalwar: The lyric video for “Pulse” premiered recently. How do the visual elements complement the song’s themes?
PENTESILEA ROAD: With “Pulse”, we had just a lyric video; the fact that it is more elaborated and focuses on non-
static images should not be interpreted in a misleading way:
it is not conceived as a videoclip, but just a sequence of nice images accompanying the song.
The images are either supporting or complementary to the lyrics, but it can’t be thought of as a real videoclip.
I presonally disliked the idea of having a very basic static-images video, with some lyrics on top of it (as we did in
teh past, by the way)… that’s why we opted for this solution.
Metalwar: How has the response been to “Pulse” so far, and what feedback have you found most impactful?
PENTESILEA ROAD: It’s early to say, but so far the response seems very positive. The song has been listened a lot on the streaming platform…
we will wait for the full album to be out to start collecting some real feedback and reviews.
Metalwar: What can fans expect next? Are there plans for more singles or a tour leading up to
the album release?
PENTESILEA ROAD: Yes, we will announce very soon the release date for the new album.
Our plan is to release at least 4 singles.
Regarding the tour, unfortunately not: PR is a studio band; we’ve never really thought of going live, although it might come in the future… who knows!
