DAIDALOS is a symphonic Black Metal project created by Tobias Püschner in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic. From this alone, one can understand that we are talking more about a psychological need than about a simple artistic expression of Püschner.
“Dante” (will be officially released on February, 20th by Rockshots Records) is the second full-length album by DAIDALOS and is essentially a different interpetation of Dante’s “Inferno”. In fact, Püschner attempted to follow the story step by step and present through his music all the stages of the descent into hell. From the absolute silence of the forest in the introductory “Dante” to the crossing of the river and the arrival at the gates of hell in “Dis”. The use of short intros and interludes such as “Styx” or “Gate” function as bridges that help the story flow more as a literary reading than as a musical album. In fact, as the creator states, in the vinyl version that will be released there will be no gaps between the interludes and the songs. In all the songs, the symphonic element is strong with the choirs and the use of instruments such as the violin, which gives them a majestic texture and as we approach the end, this becomes even more intense as in “Euphobia” and “Ultimatum” that close the album.
The feeling left by listening to “Dante” is not so much the fear of hell and eternal torment but more the invocation of a melancholic and almost suffocating atmosphere through the almost cinematic rendering of the story. The dark compositions create a strong contrast with the symphonic parts that makes the album quite special and original, although we can distinguish influences from bands such as SEPTICFLESH or FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE.
DAIDALOS’s “Dante” is a well-crafted musical story that must be heard in its entirety by the listener, and in the exact order in which the songs are arranged. We may live in an era where music is consumed like fast food, but sometimes it is necessary to pay attention to a musical work. And “Dante” is one of those.
