They say that music and love have their own universal language. Both, evoke emotions that need no words to express them. Listening to the new album by Finnish band KAUNIS KUOLEMATON, “Kun Valo Minussa Kuoli,” as well as the rest of their discography, I understood exactly what we mean by the above.
In a recent conversation we had with Mikko Heikkilä, singer and guitarist of KAUNIS KUOLEMATON, he told us that he feels more straight forward and safe writing lyrics in his own language, and that this was a decision made very early on and one they insist on sticking to. However, their music speaks louder. Their themes deal with sadness, grief, people’s everyday lives, but also the beauty that surrounds us, and their compositions manage to bring all these emotions to the surface. “Kaunis Kuolematon” means “immortal beauty,” and that is exactly what they express. A melancholic beauty that surfaces despite all the difficulties of life.
In 50 minutes of music, the band unfolds all its influences. There are extreme moments with Olli Saakeli Suvanto’s growling vocals, but also more melodic and introspective moments with Mikko’s clean vocals. The listener can easily recognize the Death Metal influences, as expressed mainly in Northern European countries, but also an almost Post metal aesthetic that we encounter more in bands from Central Europe. “Merta,” which is also the first single they released, is characteristic of their style but also quite accessible to the listener, especially those who start getting to know KAUNIS KUOLEMATON now. The guitars and drums alternate in their role, which, among other things, is to create a doomy, melancholic atmosphere that characterizes the entire album.
The meaning of the album title is “When the light inside me died out.” The truth is that the atmosphere is dark, but it does not convey a feeling of pessimism, but rather a sweet melancholy. The use of the Finnish language is not a hindrance, but, as paradoxical as it may sound, it ties in perfectly with the final result. KAUNIS KUOLEMATON is a band worth discovering, and believe me, the language will not be an obstacle to falling in love with their music.
