The Danish band MØL has been wandering the dark paths of atmospheric metal for almost fifteen years and are gradually shaping the sound that suits them best. With “Dreamcrush”, their third full-length album, they come even closer to what seems to be their element.

An album that moves on the borders of Post Black and Blackgaze but increasingly moving away from the classic Black Metal lines. As is clearly evident from the title, MØL explores the theme of dreams, conscious and unconscious. Thus, their compositions should, as expected, evoke a specific atmosphere that moves between realism and a dreamlike state. The most characteristic example of “Dreamcrush” is the first song of the album, “Dream”, which sets the boundaries from the beginning. The alternation between brutal and clean vocals is one of the album’s strong points and captures, at least in my mind, the two conflicting emotions that nightmares and beautiful dreams evoke.

The album’s 10+1 songs (the +1 is the orchestral, almost one-minute bridge “∞”) offer a welcoming variety that makes listening to “Dreamcrush” enjoyable and comfortable. From the intense Black Metal roots of “Young” to the more old school pop aesthetic of “A Former Blueprint”, MØL give each song a distinct identity and leave nothing to chance. Besides, as I have read, the creative process lasted several months, thus giving them the opportunity to work on each song separately and without time pressure.

“Dreamcrush” is the ideal proposal for those who believe that the Metal scene has become saturated and we keep hearing the same thing over and over again. MØL started 2026 with a bang, wanting to prove to us that inspiration exists in abundance as long as one has an open mind, heart, and soul to discover it.
