I first became aware of Marialena Trikoglou as an artist a few years ago at a Ladies of Metal Festival, in what was—if I remember correctly—her first live appearance on the metal scene, and naturally, I was immediately impressed by her voice. It was evident, however, that she was still missing certain elements needed to truly stand out. Over time, Marialena built upon that very promising raw talent, and now we arrive at the presentation of MYSTFALL’s second album, titled “Embers of a Dying World”.
The album contains all the essential ingredients of modern symphonic metal: grand orchestral arrangements, choral vocals, rich instrumentation, and the use of string sections, with Trikoglou’s operatic vocals taking center stage. The opening track, “Whispers in the Tempest”, immediately sets the tone of the album, combining power and melody, while its guitar solo adds intensity and character.
The biggest surprise, however, comes with the title track, “Embers of a Dying World”, where session bassist Stelios Varotsakis’ growls add a heavier dimension to both the song and the album as a whole. In “Guardian of the Earth”, influences from bands like Epica are clearly evident, with the string arrangements playing a leading role, while “The Nectar and the Pain” serves as an orchestral bridge to the darker “Sleeper in the Abyss”, which reaches its climax through Varotsakis’ intense vocal outbursts.
The second half of the album keeps the momentum alive. “Fading Memories” raises the tempo, while “Crimson Dawn” stands out as one of the album’s finest moments, thanks to the alternation between clean vocals and growls, as well as its particularly effective guitar solo by Aris Baris. In “Cosmic Legends”, Celtic influences bring a different atmosphere to the table, enriching the sonic palette, especially in the introduction and orchestral passages, while “Echoes of Arcadia” presents a more direct, tighter, and punchier version of MYSTFALL’s musical identity thanks to Dimitris Miglis’ drumming.
The album closes with the ballad “Remnants of Tomorrow”, a track that brings the listening experience to an ideal conclusion through slower tempos and strong emotional weight, allowing the guitar melodies to shine.
Overall, “Embers of a Dying World” is a carefully crafted and high-quality release that manages to stand out in a musical genre often characterized by repetitive formulas and a lack of fresh ideas. The production is excellent, bringing clarity to both the instrumentation and the complex arrangements, while its total runtime—just under 40 minutes—maintains cohesion and prevents listener fatigue.
With Marialena Trikoglou reaffirming her vocal talent and Stelios Varotsakis adding an unexpectedly dynamic dimension, MYSTFALL prove that they are on a steady upward trajectory. Through constant live performances and appearances at various festivals, the band seems to be on the right path toward continuous growth and evolution.
