A Metal genre that is constantly gaining ground especially among the younger generations of metalheads and especially on the other side of the Atlantic is metalcore/deathcore and specifically its melodic subgenre. OV SULFUR represent this generation well, since they have been making huge steps regarding their popularity since 2020, when they were founded in Las Vegas until today.
Their second full-length album, “Endless”, confirms their evolution. Majestic, pompous, well-crafted, well-polished, it contains all the elements they want to present. The combination of brutal vocals by Ricky Hoover and clean (not as clean as NE OBLIVISCARIS, for example) by Chase Wilson gives a welcome variety to the album, which is enhanced by the musical contrasts. The abysmal Death parts succeed the symphonic and melodic ones, while the riffs stand out and raise the level of quality. The album is divided into two parts. Excluding the introduction, we have a total of 9 songs. The first trio of “Seed”, “Forlon” and “Vast Eternal” do not let the listener breathe. Hoover’s vocals in particular are abysmal, as if they come straight from the bowels of the earth. Together with the many symphonic elements, they create a suffocating atmosphere that is enhanced by the heavy drums. In “Wither” for a moment I thought that accidentally I started listening to another album. A very modern, dynamic ballad that however seems out of place in the general chaos that prevails although it includes a very strong guitar solo. Nevertheless, it is probably the most radio friendly song at least in U.S.A.
Things return to normal with “Evermore”, which also opens the second part of the album and stands out for its tempo changes. In the next three songs, OV SULFUR welcomes three guests. In the chaotic “Dread” Josh Davies of INGESTED, in the darker and slower “Bleak” Johnny Ciardullo of CARCOSA and in “A World Away” with the amazing solo, Alan Grnja of DISTANT. The album closes with another ballad, “Endless//Loveless” which I hope will not be swallowed by the incredible power of the album because it is a really nice song with a short but wonderful guitar solo and passionate vocals from Wilson.
OV SULFUR’s influences are obvious. Modern like LORNA SHORE symphonic like SPETICFLESH, multidimensional like FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, dark like DIMMU BORGIR. I don’t know if they do it as well as the aforementioned older and more experienced bands but they are definitely on the right track and “Endless” takes them many steps forward toward their goal.
