KA’APER return with their second full-length album, When Gods Walked the Earth, a record that brings together
melodic death metal, darker atmospheric elements and the band’s fascination with ancient mythology.
The album is built around heavy guitar work, strong melodies and a consistently dark atmosphere. Songs such as
“Amenhotep,” “Pharaoh” and the title track establish the Egyptian and mythological character of the record, while
KA’APER avoid turning the concept into a simple backdrop. Themes of death, betrayal, madness and mortality run
throughout the ten tracks, connecting the ancient imagery with more familiar human emotions.
Musically, the band know when to push forward and when to slow things down. There are plenty of aggressive riffs
and harsh vocals, but also melodic passages that give the songs room to breathe. “Lament for Osiris” is one of
the more atmospheric moments, helped by the guest vocals of Julia Selikhova, while the violin parts from Ellen
Pcheliakova add another layer to the album without becoming overused.
The strongest part of When Gods Walked the Earth is its balance. KA’APER sound heavy without sacrificing
melody, and atmospheric without allowing the songs to lose their bite. There are clear traces of bands such as
Septicflesh, Dark Tranquillity, Rotting Christ and Insomnium, but the Egyptian theme and the darker character of
the material give the album its own identity.
The production, mixed and mastered by Max Baryshnikov, is powerful and clear enough for the different elements
to come through without taking away the rawness the music needs.
When Gods Walked the Earth is a solid step forward for KA’APER. Dark, melodic and heavy, it is an album that
works best as a complete journey rather than a collection of individual tracks. Fans of melodic and atmospheric
death metal should find plenty here to sink their teeth into.
