Lloth – “Archees Legeones” (Ancient Legions) album review

The legacy behind the name Lloth is immense, carrying the weight of iconic figures like Tristessa and the legendary Astarte, as well as a deep-rooted connection to the ‘90s — elements that remain integral to the band’s identity.

Their second full-length album, “Archees Legeones” (Ancient Legions), follows the 2017 release “Athanati”. Here, we’re presented with ten well-crafted and tightly structured tracks, spanning approximately 47 minutes, that transport the listener back to beloved eras and sonic landscapes.

Sonically rooted in the traditions of Greek death/black metal — and even broader influences — the album remains captivating from start to finish. Its strength lies not in reinventing the genre, but in reawakening its essence with sincerity and precision.

Lyrically, the themes lean toward the epic and supernatural, offering a layered experience full of symbolism and clear messages. Once again, Lloth express their love for the Greek language in their lyrics, which blends harmoniously with the overall aesthetic rather than feeling intrusive.

Musically, the band delivers a top-tier performance. Their approach is both powerful and melodic, enhanced by the pristine production and mixing of George Emmanuel (Lucifer’s Child, ex-Rotting Christ) at Pentagram Studio. The sound is immersive and atmospheric, with every instrument earning its place in the final mix.

The vocal performance by Nicolas Maiis (Melanomorfos) is outstanding — exactly what we’ve come to expect — and Androniki Skoula adds a haunting touch to several tracks: “Paianas”, “Mother”, “Archees Legeones”, and “Acherodas”. Guitarists Vaelor and Thanos are responsible for much of the album’s melody and ambience, while the rhythm section oscillates between epic pacing and sheer force.

The album’s striking artwork, created by the talented Mars Triumph, is a full-scale hand-painted piece that perfectly captures the raw emotion and grandeur of the record.

Standout tracks include “Archees Legeones”, “Acherodas”, and “Dark Mountain”, though the entire album maintains a consistently high standard.

It took eight whole years for “Archees Legeones” to see the light of day, and the wait has proven worthwhile. Lloth are here — not to innovate or shock — but to guide us through soundscapes only they know how to traverse, and to remind us of the true character of Greek extreme metal.
