SANCTUARY live at Piraeus Club Academy on April 22nd

It’s a cliché, but it’s also true: SANCTUARY needs no introduction. Especially to us, the Greek audience. It’s also true that, for us, SANCTUARY will always be Warrel Dane.

We have no illusions; this void cannot be filled. But together, we can make his work live on forever.

In one of the few shows that band founder Lenny Rutledge (guitars) will give together with the band’s original drummer Dave Budbill, they will perform live anthems from their forty-year career, with special mention of the masterpieces “Into The Mirror Black” and “Refuge Denied”, as well as select tracks from the rest of their discography.

On vocals, they have enlisted American Joseph Michael, who left the best impressions on his visit last year with WITHERFALL, while his performances with SANCTUARY won over even the most skeptical fans.

Last but not least, George Hernandez on bass led us to discover the hidden gem of the 80s, PANIC. With such a background, there is no cause for concern.

Sanctuary quickly conquered Seattle when they started in 1985 and, despite their extremely unfortunate course, they continue to gain fans to this day, among them the not-so-easy Dave Mustaine (MEGADETH), who decided to produce their first album after hearing their demo during a visit to their city.

That album was none other than the legendary “Refuge Denied” (1987), which launched their career and led to the iconic “Into the Mirror Black” (1990), which would certainly have been received differently if it had been released a few years later, when the grunge craze had already worn off. This was clearly demonstrated when the band’s “natural successors,” NEVERMORE, began releasing their work.

Their reunion in 2011 and the release of “The Year The Sun Died” in 2014 thrilled fans and critics who were eager to see the band finally take its rightful place in the metal firmament. Unfortunately, however, luck was once again not on their side, as the untimely death of the man who defined the band’s identity, Warrel Dane, ruled out any possibility of a continuation. Today, SANCTUARY’s creator, Lenny Ruttledge, keeps his friend’s fiery words alive through the chilling compositions they wrote together, which today sound as sharp and necessary as ever.
