For more than four decades, The Sisters of Mercy have been an iconic force in underground music. The band formed in Leeds, England in 1980 and, while taking their name from a Leonard Cohen song, drew inspiration from artists such as David Bowie, Slade and the Velvet Underground. However, their closest sonic relatives are the Stooges, Motörhead and Suicide, influences that helped shape a sound that was completely distinct from other bands of the post-punk era.
With Andrew Eldritch leading, the band combined a fast-paced, powerful melody and a distinctive vocal approach, releasing classic albums such as “Floodland” (1987) and “Vision Thing” (1990), as well as landmark songs such as “Temple of Love”, “More”, “Lucretia My Reflection”, “This Corrosion” and “Dominion / Mother Russia”, which established them as a benchmark for rock music.
The hypocritical nature of the music industry in the 1990s caused Andrew Eldritch to have a strong distrust of the record industry, leading him to focus primarily on live performances rather than recordings. Despite the limited number of official studio releases, The Sisters of Mercy have acquired almost mythical proportions. Their popularity has not only not diminished, but has strengthened over time, their multifaceted and intelligent rock’n’roll sound has influenced countless bands, while their live performances have always been a magnet for a diverse audience, of different generations and musical tastes.
Despite the absence of a new album release, the band’s creative activity has been particularly intense in recent years, with the presentation of many new songs that have been warmly received. This material is said to draw on the strongest elements of their classic period, while maintaining an absolutely modern character, faithful to The Sisters of Mercy’s timeless motto of “always moving forward”.
Recent reviews of their live shows are calling it their strongest show in years, with Eldritch flanked by the excellent performances of Ben Christo, Kai, “Ravey” Dave Creffield and, as always, Doktor Avalanche. Add to this a cinematic light show and a setlist that combines big hits, lesser-known songs and newer material, and you have the recipe for an explosive live show.
On Saturday, September 12, the legendary The Sisters of Mercy will be in Athens and the Floyd, for an evening that is expected to be unforgettable.
