VOID DROID is a band that for me is terra incognita. A band that I knew their existende but had never listened to. And the time has come for me to get involved thanks to their latest album, “Mythic” which was released early last December.

In “Mythic” they attempt something very bold and difficult. To connect music with 8 different natural phenomena and places around the world. From sunny Hawaii to the dark depths of the Marianas Trench and from rainy Venezuela to mysterious Tanzania. It starts with “Lahaina Noon”, a rare tropical phenomenon that occurs in Hawaii twice a year (May and June) where the sun is exactly vertical, resulting in objects having no shadows. The song begins with the sounds of the sea and has a pleasant, almost playful atmosphere and a rock attitude. From the sun we move to the storm and the “Relampago del Catatumbo”, an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs in the Lake Maracaibo region of Venezuela and is characterized by hundreds of lightning bolts. As expected, this particular song is more dynamic with the drums playing a leading role. “Hum Of Taos” is a mysterious humming sound that is heard in Taos, New Mexico by a small percentage of the residents of this particular place. The song does begin with a murmur, while here too the drums give a more aggressive tone to the song at several points and in general the vocals are quite playful. Then VOID DROID travel to Tanzania and Lake Natron, which has a bright red color and is considered one of the most inhospitable places in the world. Red is considered a warm color, so the song, “Natron Red” radiates warmth both with the singer’s performance and rhythm, while towards the end it has a very nice guitar solo.

The next song “Mariana Trench”, is one of my favorite songs andobviously refers to the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the oceans in the western Pacific Ocean. The truth is that although I love this particular song, I think a more doom rhythm would have suited it better since that’s how I have this part of the world in mind. “Mariana Trench” starts off slowly, then builds up in intensity until we reach a particularly catchy chorus, culminating in an incredible guitar solo shortly after the middle. Finally, it ends with a piano solo where you really feel like you’re in an abyss from which there is no escape. The next song, “In Darvaza” takes us to Darvaza, Turkmenistan, where the so-called Gates of Hell are located, a crater that burns continuously due to the natural gas present underground. This song is clearly more intense and slightly epic with distinct oriental elements. The penultimate song, titled “Tunguska”, refers to a very large explosion that occurred in an uninhabited area near the Tunguska River, most likely caused by the impact of a large asteroid. The song begins with a relaxed mood until the musical explosion and an interpretation that captures the helplessness of people to stop such a huge event. The album closes with one of the most beautiful songs, the ballad-like and atmospheric “Whisper of Stars”, which with its majestic character refers to the vast galaxy, full of stars. Its more relaxed introduction brings to mind a journey into space… lonely and silent until the explosion of light from the millions of stars in the sky.

“Mythic” is a musical journey that gives birth to emotions and images. Sometimes in a successful way, sometimes less so, but nevertheless it is a very special album for which VOID DROID mobilized all their creativity and imagination.
