Four years after “The Death of Death”, Playgrounded return with their third full-length album, a record born out of a long period of change, loss and searching. On “A Flower to Water”, grief is not treated as a single moment, but as a process that evolves and reshapes itself over the passage of time.
Musically, Playgrounded continue to develop their prog/post-metal sound, placing even greater emphasis on the electronic elements that have become an integral part of their music, while allowing more room for atmosphere, repetition and introspection. Heavy guitars and drums coexist with synths that are at times massive and at others fragile, alongside hypnotic vocal melodies, creating a sonic landscape that slowly takes shape before erupting with the characteristic intensity that defines the band.
The recordings were completed over the course of a few months in six different studios across Athens, while the mixing and mastering were handled in Norway by C. Cederberg (Leprous, Anathema) and G. Tandero (Satyricon). The evolution of the compositions throughout this intricate process has also left its mark on the album’s sound — something that became evident with the preceding singles “Counting Embers” and “Snow”, which showcased the different sides of the material and paved the way for the album’s full release.
On September 18, “A Flower to Water” will be delivered in its entirety to the public. A record that, as Playgrounded themselves describe it, contains their most honest thoughts, fears and efforts, and one they hope will reach the listener for exactly what it is: a flower, with everything that this entails.
