If you are among those that like to read various metal webzines you may have noticed that Greek metal artists or bands are difficult to find a way for worldwide exposure even though Greek Metal scene is one of the richest in the world. One of the exceptions is The Magus and his personal project THE MAGUS, a fact that shows the huge impact he has in Black Metal.
So a new album by THE MAGUS, the second one, is big news for the Black Metal (and not only) community. Two years after the very special “Βυσσοδομώντας” which was easily one of my favorite albums for 2023, the time has come for its successor entitled “Daemonosophia” which is scheduled to be released on February 20. “Daemonosophia” does not lack the theatricality and the luciferian, mysterious atmosphere, but compared to its predecessor, it is clearly more extreme and with a more “in your face” mood that Black Metal lovers will like.
It consists of 9 songs plus the introductory “Pater Noster” which is an invocation to Lucifer. The first song is “Pseudoprophetae“, which was also the band’s first single. Classic speedy black metal song that bears the signature of The Magus. Everything you need to get the listener’s attention from the first second. However, we quickly move to the more epic “Daemonosophia” with the choirs, the mid-tempo aesthetic and of course the excellent female vocals from Lambrini Gioti which make a nice contrast with the extreme vocals of The Magus. Next in line is “The Six in Three is All One” which is essentially the song from which the inspiration for the unique cover designed by Nestor Avalos came and depicts six demonic entities: Lucifer/Samael in the center, Leviathan/Tiamat on the left and Belial/Satan on the right.
Τhe Six are Three. The Unholy Trinity. The Three are One. The Absolute. The Infernal pact.
In “Βυσσοδομώντας”, The Magus had made a musical connection with NECROMANTIA through “Give Devil His Due: The Story”. This time the connection is made with THOU ART LORD through the mysterious, atmospheric “The Era of Lucifer Rising”, a Luciferian interpretation of THOU ART LORD’s “The Era of Satan Rising”. Low tempo guitar introduction, female vocal choruses and spoken words from The Magus compose an almost ritualistic song that stands out. Then we return to more familiar paths with “Magia Obscura” and the amazing guitars. “Amelia” offers us a 60-second orchestral orgasm starring El’s guitar in a song that is a tribute to KING DIAMOND. Approaching the end of the album, “The Chapel of Iniquities” transports us to a chapel with the bells in the introduction setting the tone and the guitars with the drums creating an almost suffocating atmosphere. In “The Pact” we have another classic Black Metal song (as classic as it can be when The Magus is the composer) to reach the impressive closing of the album with “La Llonora Negra”, one of the most special songs on the album where the rhythmic melodies, the female vocals of Ioanna Zacharopoulou and the keyboards that give it an almost eerie character stand out. Another version of this particular song has been performed by the unique Diamanda Galas.
The Magus is one of the few who really put their signature on everything they do and their music stands out. “Daemonosophia” may differ in many ways from “Βυσσοδομώντας” but their common identity is evident. Black Metal with strong doses of Heavy Metal, epic and atmospheric dimensions and multi-layering at all levels. With THE MAGUS nothing is superficial…
