CORONER live in Athens in Gagarin 205

For many years, CORONER have stood as one of the most influential—and uncompromising—bands in the history of European metal. When they made their long-awaited recording comeback in 2025 with “Dissonance Theory”, they proved that they remain as forward-thinking as ever, delivering an album that earned multiple “Album of the Year” accolades from the international metal press.

On Friday, October 30, 2026, the Swiss legends return to Athens for the first time in fifteen years, joined by Germany’s legendary DEPRESSIVE AGE, who will be making their long-awaited Greek debut, as well as the outstanding CRYPTIC SHIFT, one of the most exciting new names in progressive and technical extreme metal.

The Swiss masters CORONER need little introduction. Widely regarded as one of the most important bands in the history of technical thrash metal, they forever changed the way musicians and fans perceive technicality, composition and musical evolution within extreme metal.

Formed in Zurich in the mid-’80s, after initially serving as the road crew for fellow Swiss pioneers CELTIC FROST, the band developed a truly unique musical language, seamlessly blending thrash metal with classical music, avant-garde experimentation, progressive rock, jazz and, later on, industrial influences. Their innovative approach inspired countless bands that followed.

Albums such as “R.I.P.”, “Punishment For Decadence”, “No More Color”, “Mental Vortex” and, of course, “Grin”—an album that was misunderstood and heavily criticized upon its original release before eventually being hailed as a masterpiece years later—have become cornerstones of metal history. These are timeless records that continue to sound more modern and adventurous than many contemporary releases.

Following their split in 1996, CORONER’s return to the live stage in 2011—which included memorable performances in both Athens and Thessaloniki—rekindled fans’ hopes worldwide. Yet the wait for new music would ultimately stretch beyond three decades. In the end, however, it proved to be well worth it.

“Dissonance Theory” is a thoroughly modern metal album that demonstrates beyond any doubt that CORONER remain ahead of their time. Tommy Vetterli once again delivers a monumental guitar performance, while Ron Broder’s unmistakable voice has lost none of its power or character over the years. It is a comeback completely devoid of compromise.

On October 30, 2026, Athens will welcome the band back fifteen years after their last appearance in the city, for one of the very few European dates on their current tour. And they won’t be coming alone—this Athens-exclusive event will also feature two exceptional special guests, making it one of the most remarkable metal lineups of the year.

Germany‘s DEPRESSIVE AGE (who briefly performed under the name D-AGE between 1996 and 2001) have achieved an almost mythical status within the underground metal scene. Originally formed in Berlin in 1984 under the name BLACKOUT, they adopted the DEPRESSIVE AGE moniker in 1988, drawing inspiration from bands such as CORONER, among others, and went on to release four highly distinctive albums.

Blending technical thrash metal with progressive metal, dark atmospheres and a profound sense of melancholy, while being driven by the unmistakable and unique voice of Jan Lubitzki, they established themselves as one of the genre’s most original acts. From “First Depression” (1992)—widely regarded as one of the greatest technical/progressive thrash metal albums ever recorded—to “Lying In Wait” (1993), “Symbols For The Blue Times” (1994) and the remarkable “Electric Scum” (1996), which successfully incorporated gothic and alternative influences without sacrificing the band’s identity, DEPRESSIVE AGE consistently proved they were unlike anyone else in metal.

After remaining inactive for many years, the band finally reunited in 2022—following two short-lived reunion attempts between 2003 and 2005, and again in 2014—and quickly demonstrated, through appearances at major European festivals, that their music has lost none of its relevance or timeless appeal. Although their long-awaited new studio album, to be released via Fireflash Records, is still forthcoming, their upcoming appearance in Athens will mark their first-ever performance in Greece, offering fans a rare opportunity to witness one of underground metal’s most respected cult bands live.

Meanwhile, Britain’s CRYPTIC SHIFT have rapidly emerged as one of the hottest new names in progressive and technical thrash/death metal. In just a few short years, they have established themselves as one of the most talked-about acts in the modern extreme metal scene.

Formed in 2011, the band initially released a series of demos, singles and EPs before making a major breakthrough with their outstanding 2020 debut album, “Visitations From Enceladus”. Six years later, having signed with Metal Blade Records, they returned with the phenomenal sophomore effort “Overspace & Supertime”, further refining a sound that seamlessly combines technical death metal, thrash, jazz fusion, science-fiction themes and the adventurous progressive metal spirit of the early ’90s.

Their expansive compositions unfold like cinematic journeys through deep space, filled with constant twists and turns, dazzling musicianship and extraordinary imagination, while embracing an even more extreme approach than bands such as BLOOD INCANTATION. Echoes of DEATH, ATHEIST, CYNIC, NOCTURNUS, PESTILENCE, GORGUTS, VEKTOR and even ALLAN HOLDSWORTH can all be heard within a sound that remains unmistakably their own. CRYPTIC SHIFT are happening right now, and in a few years—when they’ve become one of the genre’s biggest names—we’ll be saying we saw them opening this very show.

On Friday, October 30, 2026, at Gagarin 205 Live Music Space, three different generations of musicians—each relentlessly pushing the boundaries of extreme metal and beyond—will share the same stage for one unforgettable night. The pioneering CORONER, the unjustly overlooked DEPRESSIVE AGE, and the rising force that is CRYPTIC SHIFT.
