The French heavy trio ELEST transforming two decades of metalcore, sludge and noise-hardcore history into something warmer, stranger and considerably more exposed.
Initially issued in March 2026 as a limited local release through independent label Contre Courant Records, ‘The Cruelty of Wisdom’ is now reaching a wider audience through an expanded international campaign.
Across ten tracks, ELEST brings massive, dissonant guitars into collision with clean blues-inflected vocals, progressive structures and shifting elements of death metal, doom, southern rock, post-rock and ambient experimentation.
The result is neither a softened version of the band’s former identity nor a nostalgic return to traditional metal.
It is a complete reinvention.
Formed in 2006 by Julien Doire on guitar and vocals, Joël Cuoq on drums and Florian Britto on bass, ELEST originally emerged from the abrasive intersection of metalcore, sludge and noise hardcore.
On ‘The Cruelty of Wisdom’, the distorted screams of the band’s earlier work disappear. Clean melodies rooted in blues, stoner and desert rock take their place, while the instrumental foundation remains uncompromisingly heavy, muddy and deliberately unresolved.
Each track inhabits a different musical environment — from the death-metal darkness of “The Triumph of Death” and the doom-laden unease of “On the Devil’s Bridge” to the post-rock breadth of “When Cebenna Sleeps” and the atmospheric descent of “To Eternity”.
What connects them is a constant search for harmony inside dissonance.
Lyrically, the album confronts death, grief and human finitude within a society built around distraction and denial. French folklore — lost cities, supernatural bridges and monstrous figures — becomes a language for contemporary fear, mourning and mortality.
Its initial exposure may have been intentionally limited. The record itself was never conceived on a limited scale.
