Live Report: Rock Hard Festival (Technopoli – Athens, Greece, 11-12/9/2026)

Over the past few years, Greece has seen several major metal festivals, both in Athens and across the country. Among them, Rock Hard Festival has managed to stand out from its very first edition, not only because of the bands on its bills, but primarily because of the special surprises it has in store for its audience. Last year’s collaboration between CANDLEMASS and Messiah Marcolin set the bar high and created expectations for similarly special moments at the festival’s second edition. As it turned out, those expectations were not left unfulfilled.

Rock Hard Festival – Day 1

Blood Fire Death, Stratovarius, Morgana Lefay, Primordial, Leatherhead

The first day was opened by Larissa-based LEATHERHEAD, who were called in to replace TRIUMPHER. Conditions were far from ideal, with the band performing under the scorching Athenian sun. Nevertheless, the band once again demonstrated why they are regarded as one of the most promising names of the new generation of Greek metal.

Their greatest asset remains the energy they bring to the stage, something that was immediately evident from the opening minutes. Combined with the recent release of a particularly strong album, it is easy to understand why LEATHERHEAD have generated so much hype.

During their approximately 30-minute set, the band drew material from both «V.H.S.» and their self-titled debut, «Leatherhead». Naturally, the trademark Native American headdress worn by Tolis Mekras made an appearance during the title track, which brought their performance to a close.

The early arrival of a sizeable crowd at Technopolis provided LEATHERHEAD with a warm response and proved to be an ideal way to kick off the two-day festival.

Next up were PRIMORDIAL, one of the most beloved bands among the Greek metal audience and, at the same time, a band with an unmistakable musical identity. Their atmospheric and ritualistic approach was put to the test in an environment that was rather unforgiving due to the early hour and the high temperatures.

However, Alan Averill and his bandmates showed no signs of being intimidated. The frontman’s distinctive stage presence immediately set the tone, with the noose around his neck adding an extra layer of theatricality to the performance, particularly during «To Hell or the Hangman».

One of the most moving moments came before «The Coffin Ships», which Averill dedicated to Nikos Zaggogiannis, who passed away in 2021. The PRIMORDIAL set was undoubtedly shorter than the audience would have liked, while a later slot would have been much more fitting for the atmosphere of their music. Nevertheless, even under these circumstances, the Irish band once again confirmed the special place they occupy within the metal scene.

MORGANA LEFAY followed, perhaps representing one of the biggest surprises of this year’s line-up. The Swedes had essentially remained inactive as a live act in recent years, and it had been a full eight years since their previous appearance on stage.

Their return to Athens took place under the scorching sun, a condition that Charles Rytkönen himself commented on during the performance. Despite their limited stage time, which allowed for only ten songs, MORGANA LEFAY managed to take us through several important chapters of their career, including their LEFAY era with «The Boon He Gives».

Among the highlights were «Master of the Masquerade», the Tolkien-inspired «To Isengard» and, of course, the epic «Maleficium», which brought their set to a close. Charles Rytkönen and the rest of the band clearly enjoyed every moment, and that enthusiasm quickly spread to the audience. After all, quite a few fans have been following MORGANA LEFAY for years and probably never expected to see them perform live again.

Towards the end of the set, Charles left the door open for another MORGANA LEFAY appearance in the future, although he made no specific promises.

STRATOVARIUS are a band that, in my eyes, have always possessed a certain grandeur. It is evident in their songs, their stage presence, the way Timo Kotipelto commands the stage, and even in the way Jens Johansson handles his keyboards. I had the pleasure of seeing them live for the first time on Friday, and they simply confirmed everything I had expected.

This performance had an additional reason to be considered special, as the band presented a dedicated set based primarily on their ’90s material. The concept was warmly received by the audience, even if two songs, «Phoenix» and «Hunting High and Low», technically come from the year 2000.

The interaction with the crowd was constant without ever becoming excessive, while there was a widespread feeling that this was a particularly special occasion. It is not easy to imagine STRATOVARIUS returning with a similar set, which gave the performance an additional sense of importance.

At the same time, attendance reached its peak, with Technopolis filling up considerably and once again confirming the strong connection STRATOVARIUS have with the Greek audience.

Although STRATOVARIUS are probably closer to my personal musical tastes, the performance that stood out the most for me was that of BLOOD FIRE DEATH, the all-star tribute band created in honour of legendary BATHORY and the musical legacy of Quorthon.

Bassist Frank Melander provided the direct link to BATHORY, while the participation of a number of prominent musicians from the extreme metal scene gave the project considerable weight. The idea was conceived by Erik Danielsson of WATAIN, while the line-up included, among others, Faust (DJEVEL), Blasphemer (VLTIMAS), Apollyon (AURA NOIR), Grutle Kjellson (ENSLAVED) and, as a last-minute addition, the imposing Ihsahn (EMPEROR).

BLOOD FIRE DEATH’s musical time capsule took us primarily back to the 1980s and BATHORY’s formative years. The material was performed with genuine respect for the original recordings, making it clear that this is not simply another tribute band reproducing and commercially exploiting a collection of well-known songs.

The audience response reflected that approach. Although attendance had dropped compared to the STRATOVARIUS performance, something entirely understandable given the difference in musical direction, the area in front of the stage was still filled with the kind of chaos the occasion demanded. BLOOD FIRE DEATH demonstrated that there is definitely room for such a production and, given the strength of their performance, seeing them in an indoor venue would be a particularly interesting prospect.

Rock Hard Festival – Day 2

Angra, Udo Dirkschneider, Blaze Bayley, Frank Blackfire, Dreamlord

The second day of Rock Hard Festival followed the same nostalgic and historically minded approach, with the programme placing particular emphasis on iconic figures and bands from the Heavy and Thrash Metal worlds. The day opened with the Greek thrash veterans DREAMLORD, who had the difficult task of getting the audience into the mood from the very beginning.

Attendance was lower than on the first day, but the band’s dedicated followers made their presence felt, with plenty of DREAMLORD t-shirts visible in the crowd and a strong response from the opening notes. The set began with «Out for Blood» from the band’s debut album before shifting its focus to the more recent «Artificial Imprisonment».

DREAMLORD play uncompromising thrash metal, and their inclusion proved to be a perfect fit for what was to follow. As bassist Babis Palaiogiorgos mentioned from the stage, the performance was particularly meaningful for the band, giving them the opportunity to share the stage with musicians who had been their heroes while growing up.

It was one of those moments that demonstrate the magic of music and remind us never to give up, because you never know where life might eventually take you.

Only a few days after appearing at Gagarin with Brazilian band THE TROOPS OF DOOM, supporting SACRED REICH, Frank Blackfire returned to an Athenian stage. This time, however, the programme was considerably different and particularly intriguing, featuring a special set built primarily around songs from SODOM, as well as KREATOR, focusing mainly on the 1980s and early ’90s.

The performance opened with «Victims of Society», taken from Blackfire’s solo album «Back on Fire», before moving on to the real highlights of the set. «Agent Orange» triggered one of the biggest reactions, with much of the audience singing along, while before «Remember the Fallen», Blackfire made a clear reference to the song’s anti-war message in the context of the extremely difficult global circumstances we have been experiencing in recent years.

Blackfire also encouraged the audience to form something resembling a moshpit, with a handful of die-hard fans running around and enjoying themselves to the fullest. The three musicians on stage were clearly having just as much fun, seemingly unaffected by the heat that was still making things difficult.

Considering the amount of energy Blackfire continues to bring to the stage, it would certainly be interesting to see him performing more frequently in this kind of setting, either with SODOM or through a similar solo project.

The nostalgic journey back to the golden eras of the past continued with Blaze Bayley, an artist who has developed a particularly strong relationship with the Greek audience. This time, his set was almost exclusively dedicated to his tenure with IRON MAIDEN and the two albums he recorded with the legendary band.

Songs such as «Lord of the Flies», «The Clansman» and «Man on the Edge» received particularly enthusiastic reactions, with the latter even generating a small moshpit. The absence of «The Sign of the Cross» was perhaps the biggest surprise of the set, considering that it is arguably the defining song of that particular era.

Another memorable moment came during Bayley’s short speech about the importance of believing in yourself and not allowing other people’s negative opinions to determine your choices. The message carried particular weight given that Bayley has spoken extensively about the difficulties he faced during and after his time with IRON MAIDEN.

An even more revealing moment came during Udo Dirkschneider’s set. Bayley enjoyed the set standing in a corner next to the stage with a beer in hand, taking photographs and talking to fans. It was a simple, human moment that perfectly reflected an artist who continues to treat his audience with genuine respect and clearly appreciates every moment he gets to spend on stage.

Next on stage was another iconic figure of Heavy Metal, Udo Dirkschneider. The German singer had promised a set based on the classic ACCEPT era, and he delivered, presenting a series of songs that have become cornerstones of the genre.

The performance opened ideally with «Fast as a Shark», followed by such anthems as «Midnight Mover», «Metal Heart», «Princess of the Dawn» and, of course, «Balls to the Wall». The latter generated one of the strongest reactions of the evening, with the audience singing along in unison.

The sound was noticeably better than during Blaze Bayley’s performance, allowing the songs to come through with greater clarity and impact. On the other hand, one or two additional songs would certainly have been welcome had there been an opportunity to slightly reduce the extended instrumental sections, the numerous excellent solos and the interaction with the crowd.

In any case, Udo once again demonstrated that classic Heavy Metal continues to have a strong place in the hearts of the Greek audience.

From its very first edition, the festival had already established a tradition of special editions and collaborations aimed specifically at its audience. This year’s collaboration with ANGRA followed the same philosophy, with a limited number of vinyl copies of the Brazilian band’s landmark album «Holy Land» being released to mark its 30th anniversary.

The initial promise had been that the album would be performed in its entirety. This ultimately did not happen, with four songs from «Holy Land» making it into the set instead. The band also represented their latest album, «Cycles of Pain», with both parts of «Tide of Changes», while Kate Bush’s «Wuthering Heights» was another notable inclusion.

The return of Kiko Loureiro as a guest was another major attraction, but more importantly, ANGRA once again transported us back to a purer era of metal, enhanced by the distinctive Brazilian temperament that seems to resonate so well with the Greek audience.

The set may not have ultimately been what most people expected, but ANGRA still managed to bring the second day to a close in a way that evoked some of the most classic moments of their history. According to the festival organisers, however, the change to the setlist was a decision made by the band’s management, and the organisers had not been informed about it in advance.

And so, another edition of Rock Hard Festival came to an end. After only its second year, the festival is already beginning to establish a distinct identity of its own.

From an organisational standpoint, the overall picture was extremely positive, with the collaboration with Technopolis continuing smoothly and without any significant problems. There were some sound issues during specific sets, most notably DREAMLORD, Blaze Bayley and ANGRA, but these did not have a decisive impact on the overall experience and the audience response remained strong across both days.

In an interview with our magazine, Sakis Fragos, the driving force behind the festival, had stated that his intention was to continue Rock Hard Festival only as long as it could offer something different and special to its audience, rather than becoming another conventional metal festival.

And it is precisely this philosophy that already makes us curious about the next edition. What could be in store for 2027 and, more importantly, what will be the next crazy idea to make its way onto the Technopolis stage? If the first two editions are anything to go by, then almost anything can happen!
