Penthos: “Erevos” album review

Penthos, the Greek black metal band that has long been in the spotlight of the domestic and international scene, will release its highly anticipated new album — and second overall — on October 15th, 2025, entitled “Erevos”.

Penthos chose Erevos, who according to Greek mythology was a winged, dark, and massive entity symbolizing silence and the depth of night.

Just as dark and steeped in blackness are its musical characteristics.
Minimalist black metal that refers to the genre’s primordial roots, mainly with Scandinavian influences.

Since their debut self-titled album, Penthos have impressed us with guitars delivering fast, sharp, and mournful riffs — a hallmark of the band — which could not help but be the primary ingredient in the recipe for the new album as well.
The rhythm section is outstanding in the fast parts, pompous and brutal in the slow ones, teasing our ears.
Apaisios’ vocals are tight, expressive, otherworldly, and land exactly where they should to express the album’s content.

The production is traditional, professional, without polish — just the way the band likes to sound and the way we like to hear them.
It has depth, plenty of weight, and a dark atmosphere, as if the demon of grief seeps into our souls.

It goes without saying that “Erevos” was not composed to innovate, but to speak to and take along all those who have decided to follow the path few will know.
Since their formation in 2017, Penthos have been faithful to the principles of black metal and servants of the gloomy — and with “Erevos”, they present it in the best possible way.

From the opening track “Nekyia” to the magnificent closing with “Forlorn Voyage,” Penthos spend roughly forty minutes in a ritual that I personally will be looking forward to witnessing live with great interest.

All the tracks are equally stunning and essential to the overall result, but I will single out “Όλεθρος” (Olethros), “Charon,” “Echoes from the Sanatorium,” and “Forlorn Voyage.”

Overall, with “Erevos”, Penthos are writing history — and more importantly, their own history — certainly surpassing their first album, but more importantly, overcoming any obstacle set by our times, an era without values, where everything has a price tag.
I will hold on to the value of music and, by extension, the black metal of Penthos.
