If I had to describe Finnish band CITRINITAS in one sentence, it would be… “the definition of underground metal.” CITRINITAS are preparing to introduce themselves to the public with their demo “Unending Descent,” which will be released on January 30 on cassette (yes, only cassette) and digitally.

The three songs on the album follow the same pattern. Slow tempo, a gloomy atmosphere almost suffocating, and a mixture of Black and Doom Metal. The production is as it should be on an underground demo. Deliberately (or not) muddy and old school, from another era that bears little resemblance to the present with its polished productions that all sound the same. “Light Permeates Everything” is the song that the band put in the spotlight, and it does stand out for its melodic intro and guitars. “Unending Descent” is perhaps the most doom-laden song on the album, while the third and final track, “Subterranean Egress,” closes the demo in the same manner but with a nod to the band’s black metal side.

“Unending Descent” serves its purpose, which is to introduce CITRINITAS to the underground audience in Finland and beyond. It is not a demo that will ever gain widespread acceptance or flood radio airwaves, but this aesthetic and focus help to keep alive the pure side of metal, a music that was largely born in basement bars and makeshift studios.
