GOZU return in powerful fashion with the sixth full-length album of their career, “Gozu VI”, released on May 15 through Blacklight Media Records and Metal Blade Records. The Boston-based band continues to deliver the heavy, fuzz-drenched and groove-oriented sound that has established them as one of the most distinctive acts in the American stoner/doom scene.
“Gozu VI” arrives three years after “Remedy” and features eight new tracks in which the band balances crushing riffs, psychedelic passages and a deeply emotional atmosphere. The album was produced and mixed by Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Boston, with the final result highlighting both the band’s raw power and melodic sensibilities.
According to vocalist and guitarist Marc Gaffney, the new album was written during a particularly difficult and emotionally charged period of his life, something that is strongly reflected in the overall mood and energy of the songs. Gaffney stated that he focused more than ever on songwriting and guitar work, giving the record a more direct, soulful and guitar-driven character.
The first single, “Banacek”, introduced a more groove-oriented side of the band, featuring noticeable influences from Iron Maiden in the rhythm guitar work and Jellyfish-inspired vocal harmonies. It was followed by “Corinthian Leatherface”, a track that blends stoner fuzz aesthetics with classic rock and even Motown-inspired elements, confirming Gozu’s willingness to further expand their sound without losing their heavy identity.
The tracklist of “Gozu VI” includes:
- “Corinthian Leatherface”
- “Midnight Express”
