The Gathering Live in Athens
A Night When Time Stood Still at Floyd! When Mandylion Awakened Athens Once Again!
Thirty years later, The Gathering and Mandylion proved that some music never grows old. It simply returns to awaken everything you thought had been forgotten.
A night filled with memories, emotion and songs that continue to travel straight to the soul!
Saturday evening was wrapped in the perfect atmosphere, eagerly awaited by thousands of fans of heavy music and beyond. The initial disappointment caused by the last-minute venue change, from the historic Lycabettus Theatre to the magnificent Floyd, was quickly overcome by the quality of the venue, the excellent visibility and, above all, the crystal-clear sound.
From 19:00, when the doors opened, emotions accumulated over thirty years began to surface, while the anticipation became increasingly intense. People of different ages, coming from different musical backgrounds, seemed to have gathered for exactly the same reason: to reconnect with a part of their musical past.
The Gathering are one of those bands embraced by a wide audience, having managed to unite fans from different musical genres and generations. For some, it is Mandylion; for others, Nighttime Birds, How to Measure a Planet?, or their later works. For everyone, however, there is that special connection that is difficult to put into words.
We all knew what to expect from The Gathering of today. The real question, until the stage came alive, was a different one: what would our own emotions be, and how powerful, how intense and how manageable would they be?
The remarkable Mandylion marked an entire era. An era in which purity and innocence touched our souls and created memories which, more than thirty years later, remain alive. The album still stands among the favourite releases of an entire generation, and its live revival could not help but carry an enormous emotional weight.
Exactly at 20:30, anticipation gave way to an explosion of emotion. Some were ecstatic, others stood there completely stunned, while others followed along, singing every lyric together with our beloved Anneke.
The opening of the title track, Mandylion, literally swept over us. For a few moments, it felt as though time had stopped. The first note, the atmosphere, the voice and the memories carried by that particular song created that familiar shiver that only music can provoke.
And when Anneke stepped onto the stage, nothing more was needed. Her presence, her distinctive voice and the way she connected with the audience proved once again why she remains such a unique figure in the history of The Gathering. It was not simply a singer performing in front of an audience. It was a gathering of people sharing the same musical memories.
From Eleanor and Fear the Sea to In Motion, On Most Surfaces, Broken Glass and Waking Hour, the night unfolded without leaving any room for relaxation. Each song opened a different door to the past, while the band made sure to prove that these compositions do not belong solely to another era. They remain alive.
The excellent sound and impressive lighting played an important role in presenting the songs, delivering the best possible result. Floyd proved to be a venue capable of comfortably supporting such a performance, while also creating a direct connection between the stage and the audience.
Naturally, the songs from Mandylion were given pride of place, without the performance being limited to them. The setlist travelled through a significant part of The Gathering’s discography, giving the audience the opportunity to revisit different periods of the band’s career.
And somewhere there, between Leaves, Sand & Mercury, Strange Machines and the rest of the songs, something that we perhaps already knew became crystal clear: there are concerts you attend to listen to music, and there are concerts you attend to relive moments of your life.
This particular night belonged to the second category.
For approximately two hours, we witnessed a live performance that, truth be told, we never wanted to end. The audience sang, applauded, participated and, at every opportunity, returned the energy coming from the stage.
The great “thank you” to the Greek audience, expressed by the band at every opportunity, was sincere and it showed. And perhaps this was one of the most beautiful moments of the night: the feeling that the relationship between The Gathering and the Greek audience remains alive and strong.
And when the time came for the encore, Travel and Saturnine provided the perfect conclusion. But not the end of the night within us.
The evening ended exactly as it had begun. With all of us mentally returning to those years, filled with images, sounds and emotions. Some thinking of the first time they heard Mandylion, others remembering an old concert, a person, an era, or simply that feeling created by The Gathering’s music when everything seemed different.
More than thirty years later, their music still finds its way into our hearts.
The Gathering will always be there.
And this live appearance in Athens carved their name even deeper into the memories of everyone who was there at Floyd on the night of September 26.
